Why February Is the Perfect Time to Plan Your Patio or Driveway
Beat the Spring Rush
Every year, the same thing happens. The clocks go forward, the sun comes out, and suddenly everyone wants their patio or driveway done yesterday. Landscapers across Northamptonshire get booked solid from March through to autumn, and lead times stretch out to weeks or even months.
If you start planning in February, you're ahead of the game. You'll have time to explore materials, get proper quotes, and book a slot that suits you — rather than scrambling for whoever's available.
What to Consider for Your Patio
A well-designed patio extends your living space and adds real value to your home. Here are the key decisions to think about:
Materials
This is probably the biggest decision and the one that most affects your budget. Natural stone — like Indian sandstone or limestone — looks fantastic and weathers beautifully over time, but it's at the higher end price-wise. Porcelain paving has become very popular in recent years: it's low-maintenance, doesn't stain easily, and comes in a wide range of styles. Concrete slabs are the most affordable option and have come a long way in terms of appearance, though they won't quite match the look of natural stone.
Size and Layout
Think about how you'll actually use the space. If you want a dining table and chairs, you'll need more room than you might expect — allow for pulling chairs back comfortably. Consider where the sun falls at different times of day, and think about access from the house. A patio right outside your back door is convenient, but sometimes a seating area further down the garden catches more evening sun.
Drainage
This is something a lot of people don't think about until it's too late. Any paved area needs proper drainage so water runs away from the house rather than pooling on the surface or, worse, running back towards your foundations. A good landscaper will build in a slight fall and, where needed, install drainage channels. It's not the exciting part of the project, but getting it right is essential.
What About Driveways?
Many of the same principles apply if you're thinking about a new driveway. Block paving is still the most popular choice in Northamptonshire — it's durable, comes in plenty of colours and patterns, and individual blocks can be replaced if they crack. Resin-bound surfacing is another option that's grown in popularity: it gives a smooth, modern finish and is permeable, which means water drains straight through.
One thing to be aware of: if you're paving over your front garden, there are planning permission rules to consider. If the surface isn't permeable (meaning water can't drain through it), and the area is more than five square metres, you may need planning permission from your local council. This is to help prevent surface water flooding. A good landscaper will advise you on this and make sure everything is compliant.
